A interview with Stelio Diamantopoulos by the Spanish Lacrimosa fanclub about his experiences with the cover artwork for Lacrimosa and his inspiration.

When and how did you meet Tilo? How did you start to work with him?

I met Tilo, I think it was 1990. He wanted to release his first album, ANGST. He looked for an artist who was able to create the visual for this cover and of course the LACRIMOSA-logo. And so it happend that two artists came together...

In the 2 first albums you was the bass of Lacrimosa. What can you tell me about that? How was the first Lacrimosa gigs?

I never played gigs with Lacrimosa. I only played in the studio. And a was bringing along the first guitar player with who was a close friend of mine since I was 14 and with whome I had my first band. It was very exciting and we had a lot of fun together. After that Tilo wanted to have me on tour, but I did not want to let my painting-work go. So I asked another friend of mine to go on tour to play the bass. And because this guy was a guitar player too, I gave him my beloved bass guitar to play it. So a part of me was on tour too.

How is the process of doing a Lacrimosa cover? The idea of doing them into a greyscale was yours? Which is your favourite cover?

Sometimes Tilo has concrete ideas about his next cover- sometimes I have it- and sometimes we talk and think both intensively about months to get the right idea. But never the cover is a isolated thing, it is always one piece of work together with the music and the lyrics. That's how it came that all are in black and white- it should be a special Lacrimosa- style. My favorite, oh dear, that's hard to say- maybe the last because it is very emotianal an personal.

Do yo u usually listen to Lacrimosa?

Not often. When I listen to it, I can not do anything beside it, I have to listen. And when I am working on my paintings, that does not work.

How did you decide to be an artist? I think that it must be very hard in the beginning.

If it is hard in the beginning it can be much harder after 20 years. But I had no choice- I have to paint.

In 1998 you describe yourself as a unhappy person. Do you continue being unhappy ?

You know, life always goes up and down. I have developed a kind of system for not falling in deep holes, and not always being over-enthusiastic which could be very frustrating too. All in all I never was a unhappy person. Only realisic.

What inspires you to create your paintings?

Everything. The world, emotions, music, movies, books, the black, the white and the grey etc.

Your actual drawings are very different that the firsts ones. I always have been very surprised about your aliens paintings. What passes trought your mind that make you to do that paintings? I think that they are very original and subrealistic.

Well, I think there are some similarities in this paintings and the ones of the renaissance period. After then the interest in the outhern world, the space, the siences grew and people were asking more and more questions. Today we observe again a radical change in the world. The result are more and more questions, sometimes with answers and someties not.

Which is your favourite creation, or your favourite age?

Most of time my newest creation.

Which are your future plans?

That my dream of beeing able to do nothing but my painting-work comes true.

Are you going to play bass again in a band?

I do only sessions with friends of mine the last years. But you never know...

Thanks for all, and best wishes from Spain.
